Virtual Interviews Aren’t Perfect but the Benefits Unquestionably Outweigh the Downsides

The AAMC recently published a piece about the post-pandemic persistence of residency virtual interviews. While some programs still encourage in-person interviews, most now standardly conduct online ones. The AAMC article points out important benefits including financial and environmental.

Something the AAMC article doesn’t specifically touch on is that virtual interviews have likely softened the sting of systemic sexism in the application process. The potential (albeit remote) for a candidate to record an interview or even have another person listening in diminishes the risk of sexist questions. 

What happens in the room between an applicant and faculty member may no longer necessarily stay there.

Toxic Work Environments Adversely Affect Those in Training

I recently came across a Medscape-sponsored discussion called “How can we make medical training less toxic?” The video is visible here, and you can log into Medscape to read the transcript. The participants – two emergency physicians and one surgeon – discuss sexism in the workplace, corrosive and inaccurate narratives about women residents, the importance of strong mentorship, and diversity training. This topic is additionally important because toxic work environments can lead to depression, burnout, and suboptimal patient care. My experience in residency was marred by sexism and sexual harassment. It saddens me that these problems are still present, but I’m pleased the issues are starting to be addressed.

Virtual Interviews Can Help Mitigate Systemic Sexism in Medical Interviews

Congratulations to a few applicants who have already received medical school interview invitations. For most, the season will start in the next month or so. Remote interviews are still with us, and my assertion is that the virtual interview process reduces discriminatory practices that have plagued the system for a while. Could Virtual Interviews Help Mitigate Systemic Sexism in Medicine?

Congrats to a few applicants who have already received very early medical school interview invitations. For most, the season will be starting in the next month or so. Virtual interviews through VITA or other platforms will be standard, and how that will affect the admissions process and next year’s medical school classes is anyone’s guess. My guess is that the virtual interview process will reduce discriminatory practices that have plagued the system for a while.
